The Ignatius Pew Missal is an annual subscription-based worship aid intended for Roman Catholic parishes. Available to order now for only $4.99 when you order 50+ missals!

Its purpose is simple: to provide worshipers with a liturgical resource that is consistent with the directives of the Church and accessible to the average parishioner, especially in regards to music.

This is accomplished in two ways. First, by using simple plainsong melodies for the Entrance and Communion antiphons, so that a cantor, choir, and even a congregation can easily sing them. Second, by selecting hymns and songs which, combined, provide a repertoire of sacred songs that is fitting for the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, yet accessible for the average parish.

ENDORSEMENTS

"The Ignatius Pew Missal is a beautifully produced and worthy companion for the faithful who come to worship and adore the Lord by participating in the celebration of the Eucharist. In particular Fr. Samuel Weber, OSB’s newly-composed chants for the propers will enable people to participate in a full, active and conscious manner according to the mind of the Church. I encourage both pastors and faithful alike to use this resource as a means to be formed at the greatest school of prayer that the Church possesses, the Holy Mass."

-Cardinal Robert Sarah, Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments

“The Ignatius Press Pew Missal puts into the hands of the faithful a needed resource to facilitate a fuller participation in the celebration of the Eucharist.  Texts, accessible chant in Father Weber’s newly crafted melodies, and familiar hymns will help us all to pray more easily and devoutly.

The easily readable format also offers the Order of Mass in Latin and the Readings for Sundays, Holy Days, and Major Feasts, as well as, the variable texts necessary for participation at daily Mass.  There is no doubt that this missal offers everyone a useful instrument.”

-Archbishop Timothy Broglio, Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA

"The Ignatius Pew Missal is a welcomed new liturgical resource for the faithful. This handsomely bound and beautifully printed volume includes the chant notation for all the propers, antiphons and the other sung parts of the Mass, as well as the scripture readings for Sundays, Holy Days and Principal Feasts for the given year.  In addition to providing the simple plainsong melodies for the antiphons, this volume also includes a rich array of carefully selected hymns. It is my hope that this new liturgical resource will inspire the faithful in the pews to raise their voices in sung prayer, enhancing the public worship of the Church with a greater sense of the transcendent."

- Bishop James Conley, Diocese of Lincoln

“The Sacred Liturgy is the greatest of the Church’s treasures and the fullest expression of her identity in Christ.  It is also the principal means by which the Church hands on the faith, for the Sacred Liturgy is itself a culture in which believers find both their home and their nourishment.  Ignatius Press and Augustine Institute are to be commended for making available in one easy-to-use resource the riches of the Church’s liturgical year, suitable for parishes, schools, and religious communities.”

- Bishop Kevin C. Rhoades, Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend

In 2003 Pope St. John Paul II taught that “we must pray to God with theologically correct formulas and also in a beautiful and dignified way.”  Since sacred music touches the heart of faith we have to pay attention that the lyrics we sing are indeed theologically correct, and the hymnody beautiful.  Ignatius Press has done the Church a great service by giving us a Pew Missal with hymns, modern and ancient, that are both true and beautiful.  This missal also helps us to sing the Mass prayers easily - and meditate on the scripture readings.  I can think of no other worship aid that will enable us to participate so fully in the liturgy as The Ignatius Pew Missal and the Spanish version Canta La Misa.   (Most Rev. Michael C. Barber, S.J., Bishop of Oakland)

Roman Catholics of the Silent Generation and Baby Boomers were used to using daily missals and Sunday missals with which to follow the parts of the Mass.  Indeed, among the few items newly arriving seminarians were instructed to bring with them was a Daily Missal.  I still have mine as a keep-sake. These red or gold-edged handbooks with colored ribbons for marking places in the missal were the standard participation aides of the day.

The Ignatius Pew Missal is a welcome renaissance of those hand missals that aims to facilitate the restoration of Chant in worship as intended by the Second Vatican Council’s decree on the liturgy, Sacrosanctum Concilium: “The Church acknowledges Gregorian Chant as proper to the Roman liturgy; therefore, other things being equal, it should be given pride of place in liturgical services.” no. 116.  The Pew Missal incorporates user-friendly basic chants from the Catholic repertoire for those interested in making a concerted come-back to this elegant part of the Church’s musical patrimony.

Almost sixty years since the Council, sober commentary would admit that we’re beyond the biases and experimentation that has heretofore  plagued Catholic worship. The Pew Missal is attractive and fulfills the Council’s directive of full and active participation of the faithful.  With the Pew Missal, in short time, the worshipping faithful can easily pick up the rhythmic patterns of chant and its familiar soothing cadences.  The authors’ selection of hymnody offers a skillful blend of traditional and contemporary compositions.

Many pastors and parish musicians have been looking for years for an in-pew contribution like the Ignatius Pew Missal.  For parishes, cathedrals, chapels, shrines and other institutions wishing to implement the authentic mind of the Council, this attractive and easily readable worship hand book helps to stabilize the order of worship while providing an economic incentive via a sturdy light-weight pew aide that will cover the entire calendar year of readings and service music prayed in English or in Latin or parts thereof.

For the glory of Roman Catholic worship."

- Bishop Joseph N Perry, Auxiliary Bishop of Chicago

The sacred liturgy is the beating heart of the Church, and a governing principle for all of the Church’s life and mission: We mark our time by liturgical seasons; we are nourished by the Body and Blood of Christ; our community gathers to offer sacrifice and praise to God, united with the priest at the altar. It is important for the liturgy to be celebrated reverently and solemnly. The Ignatius Pew Missal is a wonderful resource that helps congregations to celebrate the liturgy with that reverence and solemnity. The beautiful sacred art that graces the cover, along with the simple chant melodies for the propers composed by Fr. Samuel Weber, OSB, and the traditional hymnody, all contribute to a sense of the sacred, and encourage active and contemplative participation from the faithful. I heartily recommend the Ignatius Pew Missal.

- Gerhard Cardinal Müller, former Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith

I firmly endorse the efforts of Ignatius Press and the Augustine Institute in bringing to the faithful this edifying and comprehensive worship aid.

- Most Reverend Robert Vasa, Bishop of Santa Rosa

I heartily recommend Ignatius Press's Pew Missal for all parishes. The Church has always lived by the adage Lex orandi, lex credendi: The law of worship is the law of belief. Our faith should shape our worship; but our worship should also shape us in the faith.  What people encounter at Mass should form them in Catholicism’s truth and beauty, in its enduring and saving character.  By its clear design and layout, its dignified chant and hymnody, The Pew Missal helps not only bring people into worship, but also form them in the Church’s liturgy.”

- Father Paul Scalia

A valuable resource for families to prepare themselves to participate more fully not just at Mass, but to truly celebrate Sunday as the Lord’s day.

Un recurso valioso para las familias que buscan prepararse para la participación plena y activa en la santa misa y verdaderamente celebrar el domingo como día del Señor.

- Most Reverend Daniel E. Flores, S.T.D., Bishop of Brownsville

The Ignatius Pew Missal has been in use for several years in some of our larger church parishes.   The pastors, when asked their opinion, have remarked that they consider the Ignatius Pew Missal ‘a great improvement,’ offering ‘a good selection of theologically sound hymns,’ embellished with ‘beautiful traditional art on the cover’ and using qualitatively better paper, binding and printed text. Of those pastors responding to our inquiry, the response to the Ignatius Pew Missal was resoundingly favorable.

- Most Reverend Glenn Provost, Bishop of Lake Charles

The Ignatius Pew Missal is a beautiful, complete and effective aid for Catholics in the most significant activity of earthly life: the worship of God in the holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Very user friendly, with full liturgical texts in both English and Latin, numerous chants, the Sunday Scripture readings and hymns both theologically sound and easy to sing, this Missal is an invaluable companion for all Catholics who deeply desire to enter fully into the mystery and meaning of the Mass through prayer, reflection, song and praise.  I highly recommend it to pastors who seek to deepen the participation of their people in the Eucharistic sacrifice.

- Most Reverend Donald Hying, Bishop of Madison

With a look all its own, the Ignatius Pew Missal is a welcome resource in helping parishes enhance the beauty of the Sacred Liturgy, particularly with its emphasis on the antiphons and other texts of the Mass.

- Most Reverend Thomas J. Paprocki, Bishop of Springfield (Illinois)

The Ignatius Pew Missal represents a suitable help for the faithful so that they will be better prepared to chant the Liturgy of the Mass and sing traditional sacred hymns. The faithful acquire, in deed, the true spirit of prayer from its foremost and indispensable font, which is the public and solemn prayer of the Church. It is above all through chant and authentic sacred music that ‘the faithful may be the more easily moved to devotion and better disposed for the reception of the fruits of grace belonging to the celebration of the most holy mysteries’ (Pius X, Tra le sollecitudini).

- Most Reverend Athanasius Schneider, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Saint Mary in Astana

When Pope St Pius X made active participation the cornerstone of liturgical renewal in the twentieth century, he was thinking above all of sacred music and in particular of enabling the people to sing the Mass. The Ignatius Pew Missal enables worshippers to do just that, in a form that is accessible and expresses the spirit of the liturgy. I find it encouraging to see the treasury of traditional hymns and chants that have nourished generations of Catholics in their faith. The inclusion of important liturgical texts and popular prayers in Latin is most welcome. This is a rich and splendid resource for the whole liturgical year.

- Father Uwe Michael Lang, London Oratory
